How did Caleb Ellsworth-Clark land the role of Dewey?

Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, hailing from Calgary, has a strong background in theater. He studied at Mount Royal University and appeared in plays like “Body Awareness.” However, the role of Dewey is a significant departure from his previous work.

The opportunity came through a casting call, where Ellsworth-Clark was chosen among many hopefuls. As a fan of the original series, he is excited to be part of this comedic universe and work alongside Frankie Muniz and Bryan Cranston. Despite his excitement, there are nerves involved in joining an established group of actors and fans.

“I know that Dewey is a lot of people’s favorite character and the way that character was portrayed by Erik Per Sullivan,” he said in an interview with Calgary Herald. “I don’t want to disappoint anyone just by not being that guy. But at the same time, I want to be here and I’m grateful for the opportunity, and maybe it’s okay that Dewey is a little different.”

Why Dewey was recast

After “Malcolm in the Middle” ended in 2006, Erik Per Sullivan’s acting career did not continue. He appeared in a few lesser-known projects and a poorly-received crime thriller before stepping away from the industry. It wasn’t until April 2025 that he was publicly recognized again after being photographed in Boston.

In 2024, Jane Kaczmarek mentioned in an interview that Sullivan had no interest in acting anymore. He was attending a prestigious American university and studying Victorian literature. Kaczmarek admired his decision, noting that not everyone finds show business appealing.

Although invited to return for “Life’s Still Unfair,” Sullivan declined, choosing to maintain his quiet life. His former cast members respect his decision, and he supports having someone else portray Dewey. Frankie Muniz stated that they had his blessing to recast the role, hoping fans would understand the choice.
