Riley Elliott, Deer Valley’s communications specialist, describes the expansion as “insanely huge” when we ride a chairlift to where the new and old sections of the resort meet. The expansion began when Extell, a development company known for its New York City skyscrapers, planned to construct a ski area adjacent to Deer Valley. Rumors about what would become of the fledgling mountain, then called Mayflower, were dispelled when Deer Valley’s parent company, Alterra, announced an agreement to operate the resort while Extell focused on the accompanying private hotels.

Much of the new terrain features gentle slopes, including the Green Monster trail, which spans 4.8 miles. Atop Park Peak, the Pinyon Express offers a high-altitude beginner enclave with blue and green trails surrounded by panoramic views. However, there are also sterner runs, such as Redemption Ridge, which plunges 2,600 vertical feet and offers both cruisers and steep shots.

Kaylin Richardson, a local skier with extensive knowledge of the area, acknowledges that it will take her at least two seasons to learn all the terrain.

A Question of Altitude

Utah has faced a snow drought this season, raising questions about the viability of the expansion. The new base area, East Village, sits at 6,350 feet, 850 feet lower than the previous Snow Park base. However, Deer Valley’s snowmaking system has grown to match the new lifts, with over 1,000 automated snow guns. This system ensures that even in dry seasons, the resort can maintain adequate snow cover.

Garrett Lang, Deer Valley’s senior director of mountain operations, emphasized the importance of pre-planning ahead of the season. Despite the challenges, the resort managed to overcome low snow and warm temperatures, thanks in part to the return of wintry weather.

The East Village base area is the epicenter of the expansion, with ongoing construction and new hotel developments. Next winter, another new lift is set to climb Hail Peak, and South Peak, a promising terrain, is expected to become part of Deer Valley in the future.

As my trip neared its end, I spotted a trio of telemark skiers navigating the moguls with determination. Their playful routine reminded me of the joy of skiing, a multi-billion-dollar industry with infrastructure projects that reflect its grandeur.
