Southwest Airlines Makes Its Debut in Knoxville
Southwest Airlines, the world’s largest low-cost carrier by fleet size, has officially launched its services in Knoxville, marking a significant milestone for the region. The Dallas-based airline began operations on Thursday, March 5, with flights to four domestic destinations. This expansion is part of a broader plan to increase its presence in the United States, with additional seasonal routes set to launch later this year.
Knoxville now joins a growing list of cities served by Southwest, including Nashville and Memphis International Airport. For travelers departing from Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS), the airline will initially offer five daily round-trip flights to Baltimore, Dallas Love, Nashville, and Orlando. These routes are expected to operate year-round, providing consistent connectivity for passengers.
Low Fares Come to Knoxville
As the world’s largest low-cost carrier, Southwest operates a fleet of more than 800 Boeing 737 aircraft. The airline recently made headlines by removing its free checked baggage policy and eliminating free seat assignments. While these changes have caused some inconvenience at the airport, they reflect the company’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations and maintain competitive pricing.
In addition to the year-round services, Southwest will introduce three seasonal routes later this year. Flights to Denver International Airport will begin next month, followed by non-stop service to Tampa International Airport in Florida starting in June, and to Austin, Texas in October. These additions will further expand the airline’s reach and provide more options for travelers.
Four-Year Round Services
Although Southwest is just beginning its operations in Knoxville, the airline is poised to become the fifth-largest carrier at TYS by the number of flights this year. Its services to Nashville, which started on March 5, will operate twice daily. Flights to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Denver, and Orlando International Airport will run once daily.
Knoxville Tyson McGhee Airport already hosts several airlines, including Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Avelo Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier, and United Airlines. While some of these carriers will compete with Southwest on its new routes, others will not. For example, there is no direct competition for flights to Baltimore, and Southwest holds a monopoly on the route to Nashville. Flights to Orlando face indirect competition from Allegiant Air, which also serves Orlando Sanford.
Seasonal Services Incoming
The introduction of Southwest Airlines at TYS is expected to bring lower fares to the region, making travel more accessible for residents and visitors alike. The airline’s seasonal services to Austin, Denver, and Tampa are anticipated to spark competition, particularly in the Austin and Denver markets.
Flights to Austin will face direct competition from Allegiant Air, which already operates on that route. In Denver, Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines are already established, while United Airlines adds seasonal services using both mainline and regional aircraft. Meanwhile, Southwest’s seasonal service to Tampa will face no direct competition, offering a unique opportunity for the airline to capture market share.
A Major Milestone for TYS
The arrival of Southwest Airlines at Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport represents a major milestone for the region. The airport has long aimed to increase low-cost flight options, and Southwest’s decision to serve TYS aligns with those goals. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee expressed his enthusiasm for the airline’s expansion, stating:
“We’re honored that Southwest, a leading American company serving millions of travelers each year, will be expanding its reach in the Volunteer State, and we’re grateful for their continued economic investment.”
