A Day of Chaos at the Chateau Marmont
Guests at the famous Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles found themselves in a moment of unexpected danger when parts of the roof began falling into the outdoor dining area due to high winds. The incident occurred during a busy brunch service, drawing attention from celebrities and regular visitors alike.
Among those present was Sacha Baron Cohen, known for his role as “Borat.” Diners were stunned when a slate and a large piece of gutter fell toward them, causing panic among the crowd. One woman quickly jumped up to hold the gutter in place, preventing it from falling on her companion. Others turned their heads in shock after hearing the loud crash.

The situation escalated as staff moved diners closer to the courtyard and cordoned off tables near the building. The event took place during a chaotic brunch at the 97-year-old hotel, which has long been a favorite spot for Hollywood’s elite. During the incident, glasses were smashed behind the bar, and emergency helicopters could be heard circling overhead as a fire broke out on the hillside nearby.
“It was chaos. Bits of the roof suddenly started falling, and we all tried to finish our food and get out,” one witness said. “The waiters looked shocked and didn’t really know what to do, but quickly moved a table away from the building after the gutter almost hit her.”

Halfway through the morning brunch, a slate fell from the roof and landed just feet away from a table of three. Staff rushed over to investigate. Around five minutes later, a huge crash was heard as an 8-foot piece of guttering slammed down on top of a heater. A guest had to hold it up while staff rushed over to move the metal pipe and relocate diners to a free table in the courtyard.
One worker could be heard muttering, “What the f—k is happening?”

As if the roof incident wasn’t enough, later in the day, a bartender accidentally knocked over several glasses, creating another loud crash. Throughout the service, witnesses reported hearing helicopters buzzing overhead and seeing fire engines speed past as crews worked to contain the flames on the hillside above the hotel.
Plumes of smoke could be seen rising above Trousdale Estates throughout the morning.

Chateau Marmont has become a popular hangout for LA’s celebrity elite, with names like Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Jacob Elordi, and Sydney Sweeney often spotted there. However, the hotel has also faced criticism for issues such as plumbing repairs, heating problems, and cracked tiles in the pool and restaurant.

The hotel is known for its secrecy regarding its famous guests, who often use it as a place to party without attracting media attention. It has been the site of various scandals, including secret affairs, drug use, and personal struggles.
In 2004, fashion photographer Helmut Newton died after losing control of his car while pulling out of the Chateau’s driveway. That same year, rumors circulated that actors Benicio del Toro and Scarlett Johansson had met in a hotel elevator after the Oscars. More recently, stars have been kicked out of the Chateau for their bad behavior.
After winning at the Screen Actors Guild awards in 2006, Heath Ledger was surreptitiously filmed using cocaine on the hotel’s front balcony. The actor died of an overdose two years later.

Britney Spears was reportedly banned in 2007 for boorish table manners, while Lindsay Lohan was ejected in 2012 after not paying her $46,000 tab. In 2019, Jay-Z and Beyoncé hosted an Oscars bash in the Chateau’s garage, which had been transformed into a luxurious lounge. Guests such as Jamie Foxx, Rihanna, and Leonardo DiCaprio enjoyed caviar and Ace of Spades champagne.
The hotel has been immortalized in numerous songs, films, and books. Built in 1929, it was modeled after the Chateau D’Amboise in France’s Loire Valley, a former home of Mary, Queen of Scots. Originally an apartment building, it evolved into a hotel by the 1950s, becoming a hub for entertainment and culture.
The Post has asked the Chateau for comment on Saturday’s incident.
