Cruise Ship Entertainment: A New Trend of Paid Experiences
Cruise ship entertainment has long been a highlight for travelers, offering a wide range of activities from live music to theatrical performances. While most shows and attractions are included in the cruise fare, a growing trend is emerging in the industry—charging fees for certain experiences.
Most mainstream cruise lines include high-quality stage productions, live music, and club shows in their fares. These performances add value to the cruise experience and are typically available without additional costs. However, some newer and more exclusive entertainment options now require passengers to purchase tickets.
One such example is Princess Cruises’ Spellbound by Magic Castle on the Star Princess. This immersive show combines cocktails with a magical performance, and guests must pay an admission fee that includes specialty drinks. Similarly, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has introduced its own version of this concept on its new ship, Norwegian Luna.
LunaTique: A New Paid Experience on Norwegian Luna
As passengers prepare for Norwegian Luna’s first cruises from Miami this spring, one of the ship’s highly anticipated entertainment offerings, LunaTique, has sparked some controversy. This experience, which is exclusively for passengers 21 years and older, is an immersive pop circus party inspired by Las Vegas nightlife. It takes place in The Improv at Sea, NCL’s comedy show venue.
LunaTique requires a $44.99 ticket, which includes four themed cocktails and a souvenir glass. Reservations for the show are available through the NCL app for the ship’s first sailings. However, some passengers have expressed disappointment upon learning that the show comes with a fee.
“I opened the app today and noticed the entertainment section actually has the entertainment finally posted. However, I was really annoyed to see that LunaTique has a $45 fee,” one passenger wrote on the NCL community on Reddit. Another shared a screenshot of the app description, which states that the $44.99 ticket (gratuity included) grants entry to the full experience, including four specialty cocktails and a souvenir glass.

Managing Demand Through Fees
While many passengers may not be thrilled about paying for entertainment on a cruise, some understand the reasoning behind charging for these experiences. With limited capacity in intimate venues, fees can help manage demand and ensure a better experience for those who attend.
“I hate the thought of paying for entertainment on a cruise ship but I can also see the reasoning behind doing so. It’s in a small venue. If everyone could go without a fee, you would have most of the ship coming to Reddit crying about how they stood in line for three hours and still couldn’t get in,” one user commented on Reddit.
This approach has already been seen with other shows on NCL ships. For example, the Fleetwood Mac tribute show, Rumours, was moved to the main theater due to high demand. On Norwegian Luna, a new Syd Norman’s Eagles tribute show will also be performed in the main theater to accommodate more passengers.
Other Entertainment Highlights on Norwegian Luna
Norwegian Luna offers a variety of other entertainment options that are included in the cruise fare. These include a high-energy Elton John concert-style show and “HIKO,” a futuristic multimedia production featuring Cirque-style acrobatics designed to captivate audiences of all ages.
The shift toward paid experiences reflects a broader trend in the cruise industry, where unique and immersive entertainment is becoming more popular. While some passengers may be hesitant to pay for these experiences, others appreciate the exclusivity and quality they offer.
