Basilicata, a region in southern Italy, has become my favorite among the 20 regions I’ve visited. While it may not be as well-known as other Italian destinations, I believe it’s one of the country’s best-kept secrets. The region’s small population, less than 550,000 as of 2025, makes it an ideal spot for travelers looking to avoid the crowds that often accompany more popular areas.

My love for Basilicata goes beyond just its beauty and charm. It also holds a special place in my heart because my great-grandmother came from Pignola, a small town near the capital, Potenza. This personal connection has deepened my appreciation for the region and its unique culture.

Maratea, in particular, stands out as a top-notch beach town with clear, sparkling waters and stunning scenery. It’s often referred to as the “Amalfi Coast dupe” due to its similar charm and affordability.

In addition to its beaches, Basilicata is home to Pollino National Park, the largest national park in Italy. The park offers breathtaking hiking trails and a variety of natural wonders, including Loricato pine trees. For those interested in history, Matera is a must-visit. It’s one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with a rich history dating back nearly 10,000 years. The Sassi di Matera, a network of cave dwellings, are a testament to the region’s ancient heritage.

Unique Cuisine and Local Delights

The cuisine of Basilicata is as diverse as its landscapes. While many are familiar with Italy’s classic dishes like pizza and pasta, each region has its own specialties. In Basilicata, the food reflects the region’s historical challenges, with dishes that are both hearty and flavorful.

Another local favorite is peperone crusco, a sweet and crunchy red pepper that can be found on everything from pasta dishes to desserts.
